Year 5 – Waltz

Welcome to Year 5. Waltz Class.

Waltz Class are going to be very busy this term!

In Literacy, the children are writing their own script and songs for our performance later in the term.  They will be the producers and directors for the show, which we will be inviting you to come and see after half term. We will also be writing stories set in imaginary worlds and studying persuasive texts. They need to continue learning their spellings and reading at home daily.

In Fibonacci maths group, the children will be revising all the areas of mathematics in preparation for SATS and afterwards will be using all their skills to solve problems and investigate maths.

Our topics this half term are ‘volcanoes’ and  ‘Holiday Showdown’ which will involve looking at the World and gaining a global perspective. We will cover all of the other subject areas through this topic and the children have already planned their unit of work according to what they would like to learn and how we are going to cover the necessary objectives. Again the children will be given the opportunity to create their own unit plan which we will then follow.

Next half term we will continue this unit of work and then move onto ‘Around the World in a Polluted Haze’ focusing on the environment and how we can become more environmentally conscious.

The Year 5 and 6 children have adapted well to their new afternoon groups and are working really well together to make the most of their learning. Whilst in their afternoon groups all children will continue with ICT and French.

Sports will also be taken during the afternoon by an external provider and children will enjoy a variety of outdoor sports. Children in Avantia group will have the sports coach on Monday afternoons for the whole afternoon; the children in Teribithia will have the same coaching every Thursday. It is extremely important for the children to have the correct kit for these sessions. Jewellery must be removed and hair tied up, it is preferable that earrings and other jewellery does not come into school on the days when they have PE, as there is a chance that it may get lost if in school.

ICT will be covered by looking at basic skills; all children will be taken to the ICT suite and given the opportunity to work on programs including Microsoft word, Powerpoint, Excel, Scratch and the Internet.

There are also many exciting events planned for the summer term including sports week  and  Waltz class has  been offered  the opportunity to sing with other Slough Schools at a special event. Further details will follow shortly.

I am looking forward to another busy, exciting and hard working term.
