Curriculum Overview

Personal, Social and Emotional Development Settling in and making relationships.

 

Getting to know each other and our families through talk and play.  Learning about rules that help us to work and play together.

 

Ourselves

 

Through roleplay, photographs, discussion and activities the children will cover the topic of ourselves.  They will learn about their development since birth, begin to understand about family relationships and share significant personal events.

 

Communication, Language and Literacy Development Phonics, language and vocabulary development.

 

Using Jolly Phonics children will be introduced to sounds, s,a,t,p,i,n,m,d,g,o,c,k,e,u,r,h,b,f and l.  Parents will be invited to phonics evening to help them understand how phonics is taught and how they can help their children in first steps to reading and writing. Language and vocabulary development will be taught through stories, poetry, rhymes and talk.

 

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy Counting, number correspondence and shape.

The children will play counting games and make simple shape patterns and pictures.  They will use their knowledge and skills to recognise shapes and numbers in the environment.

 

Knowledge and Understanding of the World Food – Children will learn about where our basic food comes from.  They will learn songs, stories and rhymes and draw and paint pictures that they will present at Harvest Festival assembly.

Environment and Senses – The children will take a sensory journey through RHS Garden Wisley and will learn about the autumn season (focusing on fruit and vegetables). The children will observe and collect seasonal objects.

ICT – Children will be getting to know the computer and some simple programmes.  Using and controlling the mouse and interactive whiteboard.

Design and making – Children will construct using a variety of media, large and small.

Creative Development Developing confidence to be creative

Through painting, drawing, cutting, sticking, roleplay, performance and construction the children will develop independence to choose and use the variety of media available in and around the classroom to encourage creativity.

Physical Development Developing Gross Motor Skills

Through outside play on equipment and games, inside during dance and control of their bodies.

Developing Fine Motor Skills

Through holding a pencil or paintbrush for drawing, painting or writing and using playdough and small world construction.
