Spring Term curriculum.

Nursery

This term we will be looking at many different short topics. We will discuss winter and spring and its effects on the environment and ourselves. We will plant bulbs and seeds in our nursery garden.

We will look at festivals of Chinese New Year, Valentines Day, Mothers Day and Easter.

We will continue to look at colours, numbers and letters.

As well as continuing to learn more traditional nursery rhymes we will be reading many traditional stories.

Rainbow Class


Our main topics in Rainbow Class this term will be 'materials' and 'growth'.

Communication Language and Literacy:
We will use the story of the Three Little Pigs for role and writing. We will continue with Jolly Phonics and use our phonic knowledge for reading and writing.

Problem Solving and Numbers:
We will be working with numbers to 10 and beyond to carry out simple addition and subtraction; talk about and recognise shapes; simple problem solving.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World:
We will be learning about growth (plants and ourselves) after half term, as well as learning through many of our day to day activities.

Physical Development:

A variety of dance sessions this term, as well as using small and large equipment in PE. We will develop our fine motor control through small play and materials.

Creative Development:
We have ongoing activities using paints, and a variety of materials for building and constructing.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development:
Stories, circle times, small group activities.

Red class – Year 2

Literacy:
We will be looking at-

Along with our main literacy sessions we will be listening to the children read twice a week and have additional phonics sessions. We will also be focusing on handwriting by working through cursive letter formation.
Spellings will be sent home every Thursday, the test will also be on a Thursday.

Numeracy:
We will be covering elements of-
Problem solving
Mental calculations
2, 5 & 10 times tables
Ordering, estimating & rounding.
Homework will be sent home on a Thursday and will include a simple math activity that should be completed by the following Tuesday. A list of several suitable math activity websites were also sent home during the Christmas holidays, please see me if you would like another copy.

ICT:
We will be writing diaries on Word to enhance our word processing skills.

PE:
Our PE session on Tuesday afternoon will be used for Multiskills. The Thursday session will be Dance with Mrs Jones.
Please ensure that your child has the correct kit and that hair is tied up with earrings removed.

PSHE:
We are focusing on No Bullying this term and are working on a new set of class rules that will enable us to get the most out of this term by working together.

Topic:
For our topic this term we are learning all about the Great Fire of London, we will be incorporating the following subject areas into the main topic area. This will culminate in a small project over the half term.

Year 4

Maths:

Literacy:
We have been learning about information texts and have made some wonderful Power Points. If you wish to see them, feel free to send in a USB pen with your child and they can save their work onto the memory stick. We are in the process of becoming TV presenters by making our very own ‘Amazing Animals’ show. We are going to be looking at stories from other cultures which will link in with our topic work. We shall study traditional stories such as The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Rabbit Who Stole the Fire and many more. We will learn to develop our story endings.

Topic:
Our topics for this term are: Getting along with each other, bullying and cultures. All our subjects will link in with this topic. I have split up the subjects for you to be able to see the ‘topic approach to learning.’

Science:
Children will be learning about water and solids, liquids and gases. This will be integrated in their topic learning as the children have been studying China and will look at Africa, looking at the different ways in which water reaches the people in these countries compared to our own. The climate will also play a part in this and as a result will need to know about certain World News stories.

Geography:
Children have been learning about China as the Chinese New Year is fast approaching. Children will also compare and contrast the differences and similarities to the country in specific to their water supplies.

History:
Children have been looking at the history of the Chinese New Year. Children will also look at the history of the traditional tales which will link to Literacy. Last term we focused on the Victorians. As our trip was unfortunately postponed we will still visit the Victorian school on March 5th as it is still a valuable experience, it lends itself into this topic, teaching children about values, morals, respect and to appreciate the school they are in now.

Music, art and craft:
We are learning songs about the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Children have been making lots of Chinese crafts and will soon be sketching and painting with and on different materials.

R.E (Ethics and morals):
Cultures and different festivals around the world.

PSHE:
We are following the SEAL package and have been learning about kindness, working together and how to be a safe and happy classroom by respecting each other’s differences and cultures.

D.T:
We will be making photograph frames. We will be having a lot of fun looking at different photograph frames, thinking about how we can improve them, designing our own, sawing wood, piecing the wood together and assembling our very own picture frame.

PE and games:
We still have our swimming time left.
We are currently studying direction in PE and working together to be able to find different pathways across various equipment. (This also links to ICT)

ICT:
The children have made fantastic Power Points and they are currently studying commands on the computer and direction. This is linked into PE and Maths.

Year 5

Literacy:
The children in J5 are currently studying instructional texts. They are learning how to read, write and follow clear instructions. Our next unit in literacy will be persuasive writing.

Maths:
Pupils will be working through mathematical units covering all four operations (+, -, ÷, x). J5 have a major focus this term on word problems and understanding methods used for division.

Science:
We will be teaching a unit titled ‘changes of state’ which helps the children find out how different states of matter (solid, liquids and gases) can change. In the second half of the term we will be looking at micro-organisms/life cycles.

Physical education:
Pippins has always had a very successful tag rugby team. We will be selecting a team from J6/J5 this year for the Slough festival in March. Within the PE lessons this half-term we will be teaching the children the passing/tagging/running skills required. This term Wasps rugby club are coming into school to provide some coaching.

ICT:
This term J5 have learning how to produce a database in Microsoft Excel and in the second half of term they will be studying different multimedia software packages. Children build up there skills with saving work accurately and formatting text in different applications.

Art/DT:
In the spring term our art/DT unit is titled ‘People in action’. The J5 pupils will be looking at drawing characters in different poses with different mediums. The children will also be studying facial expressions and how to show different emotions.
P.S.H.E: Children are finding out how to form good friendships and how best to respond in different situations. J5 have also been learning what strategies to use if they are being bullied. ‘Responsibility’ is our keyword this term.

Religious Education:
J5 are learning about festivals in Islam this half-term. The RE units give children an opportunity to learn how other faiths are worshipped.

Music:
Children will be looking at different music skills. Singing within key stage two assemblies and exploring rounds in J5. Mr Trick is also offering guitar lessons this term.

Geography:
We are learning about Europe this term. Children will use atlases/maps to find out about the location/climate/major cities of different European countries. Children will produce a project on their own European country.

Reading:
Children select a non-fiction and fiction book every week from the library. The children can take them home but they must have them in school everyday. Group reading happens in small groups on a weekly basis.

French:
Every Tuesday the children have a French lesson with Mr Trick (1:00pm – 1:30pm). This term the children are finding out how to speak and write phrases which will help them discuss the weather.

Homework:
J5 are given their homework tasks on Monday and are expected to complete these tasks by Friday. They can be a mixture of different subject areas. The tasks need to be done in the yellow homework books.

Year 6

Literacy:
